<br />
Another swim during terrible weather. I found this sheltered little cove to swim in during the arrival of Storm Franklin. For some reason the sea was now 8.4º, still cold but half a degree warmer than of late.

  • We were driving down this very long & narrow country lane. When we rounded a corner this was a very disturbing family of five standing at the roadside, two parents & three children, all faceless figures in the dark bushes. We were both genuinely shocked but said that on the way back we should stop and tentatively take a photo of them. On the return, I could tell we were both slightly on edge about seeing them again, but they'd gone, and in their place hovered this figure of a witch. Constructed or not, in this very isolated rural place, well off the beaten travellers track, even the fast change from faceless family to faceless witch, was quite bizarre.

  • Almost stumbled across this gorgeous Cornish country garden, gentle shade keeping fresh potted plants from the summer heat. There was the gentlest buzz of bees and flies and the occasional rustle of leaves as a puff of air caught the branches. I thirsted for a cool cider. There are moments when I feel that I'm being absorbed by a place, and this was one of them.

  • There was a sense of waiting in Cornwall, of anticipation, of hope. We found it surprisngly quiet for a lovely sunny day in June, that there were so few people around. The cafes were busy enough but the shops though open for business, were near deserted. Even the beaches were relatively empty. The difference between post-lockdown 20 and post-lockdown 21 is quite marked. It's been a long haul and the excitement after lockdown 1 seemed no longer felt.

I was really enjoying being on the huge sandy surf beach of Gwithian Towans and was intrigued by the figures of kayakers and surfers, both in and out of the water. <br />

At dusk, the last shreds of evening sun illuminated a low wall desperately trying to hold back a mountain-sized flood of waste slate. It seemed curiously futile but in the beautiful light I also saw how the rough structure has done it's job for decades, against all odds

  • It was so strange, but in the whiteout the only structure that stood out on these open, snowy mountain-tops was this long dry stone wall with a stile. When you peaked over the top there was literally nothing else to see, just snow and no horizon, no view at all, unless white fog is a view anyway. I started smiling about its ambiguity in these surreal conditions.

  • This is my Ladybird Book of the Countryside picture. It has all the romantic elements except the pheasant on the wall and ducks on the grass, but the buildings are just what I’d expect from the 1950s British countryside. Normally the yard looks rather quiet, but on this evening, a white horse was slowly walking about, very slowly. I just knew the moment had to be as the horse walked between the two foreground trees, catching the late evening sunlight as it did so. If it had been 2 meters further back it would have been in shadow (but at least social distancing!). So luck came out to play this evening.

  • 2020 - 15th B&W SPider Awards - Nominee in Fine Art<br />

I was fascinated by the strangely sculptural but definitely incongruous water towers dotted across the New Mexico landscape. Literally in the middle of nowhere with hundreds of acres of nothingness around, these structures stick up out of the flat plains.  <br />
<br />
This one, just off the historic Route 66 really caught my eye, so we detoured to get to it, finding ourselves at the gates of the Albuquerque Detention Centre! As numerous B&W Sheriff cars drove past I was super anxious about being detained myself, for taking pictures there, but I genuinely was just interested in the water tower. They must have thought I was more weird than dangerous, so left me to it :-)

  • It was a surreal surprise to find a ram’s skull staring at us from the apex of a derelict tin mining power house. This area is littered with the remains of an historical tin mining industry; exploration shafts now just lush grass-covered conical depressions in the wet moorland. Once a noisy hive of activity and ore crushing, but now just the sounds of the wind through gaps in the walls. Likewise the bleating of sheep still echo across the open landscape, but this poor soul has long past, the bone bleached and dripping with hill fog. It’s strange but there is such peace now on the moors and even the saturating low cloud creates a sense of calm not panic, silence not noise. I felt a deep connection with history and the spirit of the place. Dartmoor is minimal and mesmerising.

  • Below me was a frighteningly steep drop to the valley below, but literally out of the void appeared this quizzical face of a wandering sheep. It unnerved me, from surprise and also as it appeared to be clinging to thin air!

  • An ocean swell only shows it's energy as it reaches the shoreline and wraps around a swimming platform on the shore of Playa Blanca in Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. The aquamarine sea is crystal clear and you can see the reef beneath. Lobos Island and Fuerteventura can be see on on the horizon.

  • It was quite a surprise to see that the huge crescent shaped steps at Liverpool One, had been ‘greened’. I loved it. It was now a huge interactive artwork sculpture and it softened the acres of concrete and brick in this modern urban environment.<br />

OK, it’s not real grass, and this is miles from nature, but I was surprised at how easily I accepted it, and wanted to go and sit on the steps with everyone else and feel a sense of relief from concrete surroundings.

  • The field looked bare, just stone and earth. One sheep limped along, trying to keep her front foot off the floor. The other sheep just seemed to munch lightly on nothing. Soft clouds rolled over the hilltops and only the sound of the sea broke the serenity of this desolate little location.

  • I found it peculiar to see several allotments right on a Cornish cliff edge. The plastic containers were a colourful contrast to the dreary weather of the afternoon.

  • End of the day at Newlyn fishing harbour in Cornwall. The moon, HPS lights and dusk iluminate the normally bustling but now quiet industrial scene.

  • We stumbled across what we thought was a derelict cottage in the middle of woodland down a tiny track. <br />
<br />
Evening sunlight was pouring through a window beyond, and there was a reflection of the sky and trees in the front windows. I went up to the window &  was shocked to discover signs of habitation. There was even a calendar from 2015 on the wall, yet still I suspected that the place had just been deserted. I took this one image because of the beautiful light and sense of time passing, melancholy almost but imbued with such positive afternoon sunshine. <br />
<br />
It was only then that I heard a car pull up behind us. The very jovial driver was the landowner, and he told us that someone does indeed live there. The tenant is a 75 year old man who refuses to connect any power to the house, even though all the faciities are there. He only has a gas bottle to power his ancient stove. <br />
<br />
This old man has a tiny garden plot over a mile away on a steep cliff side, and he walks there regulalrly to tend his vegetagbles. He has an old car, but that is one of his only links wih modern’ish technology. <br />
<br />
The landowner is in no hurry to move the old gentleman on, and it seems he will see the end of his days in this ancient farmyard cottage, almost off the grid, and I hope deeply happy because of it. <br />
<br />
Next time I’m down, I’d love to photograph the old man himself, if he’d be happy for me to do so. What a character he must be.

  • A long shot of Moel Wnion after sunset, taken from Anglesey. I’ve always been fascinated by the wonderful rounded profile of this mountain, and in this soft, subdued colourful light, the scene looked like a geometric painting.

  • A row of terraced houses in Duke Street has formed the backdrop to a unique piece of public art reflecting an important part of the city’s history.<br />
Giant photographs which tell the story of Chinese sailors and their families have been installed on the houses which are next door to the Wah Sing Chinese School.<br />
The buildings, next to Iliad’s development East Village at the top of Duke Street have been derelict for many years but the properties have now been given a new lease of life.<br />
The artwork “ Opera for Chinatown” – has been created as part of a year-long project to create a digital archive of oral histories and family photographs of the Chinese community by artists and oral historians John Campbell and Moira Kenny also known as The Sound Agents.

  • Radio City Tower (also known as St. John's Beacon) is a radio and observation tower in Liverpool, England, built in 1969 and opened by Queen Elizabeth II. It was designed by James A. Roberts Associates in Birmingham. It is 138 metres (452 ft) tall, and is the second tallest free-standing building in Liverpool and the 32nd tallest in the United Kingdom. When considering the height of the building, however, it has a 10m long antenna on the roof, making it the highest structure in Liverpool.<br />
<br />
Near the top of the tower was a revolving restaurant, the facade and floor of the restaurant revolving as one unit, while the roof of the restaurant was used as an observation platform for visitors. There are 558 stairs up to the top, and two lift shafts which reach the top in 30 seconds.

  • Opened 16 September 1912 the ‘Lime Street Picture House’ was a very upmarket city centre cinema, with a Georgian styled facade & a French Renaissance interior. The grand entrance foyer had a black & white square tiled floor and the walls were of Sicilian marble. It housed a luxurious cafe on the 1st floor and the auditorium was designed to have the effect of a live theatre with an abundance of architectural features, embellished by plaster mouldings. It provided seating for 1029 patrons. The cinema also boasted a full orchestra to accompany the silent films.<br />
<br />
On 14 August 1916, it was renamed  ‘City Picture House’ due to another cinema opening in Clayton Square called ‘Liverpool Picture House’. In October 1920 a new company was formed ‘Futurist (Liverpool) LTD’ to purchase the cinema and the two shops for £167,000.<br />
<br />
The era of silent films ended in 1929 at the Futurist and new ‘Western Electric Talking Equipment’ was installed. By the 1930s cinemas were popping up everywhere which affected The Futurist’s business and resulted in the cinema showing second runs of leading films.

  • Drizzle was blown in with the warm winds off the Atlantic and the Spring beach was devoid of tourists. The gulls however seemed more than happy to have the beach to themselves.

Just a simple observation of two people walking along the summit of a huge wind-blown sand-dune in Fuerteventura. The fashion seemed so incongruous to the situation, and I loved the human relationship in this vast space, between the second man bending forward as his companion strode ahead oblivious.

  • Beautiful old buildings in the unspoilt old town of Ciutadella (once the capital town) of the Balearic island of Menorca. Narrow streets, tall buildings, small windows and many shutters are characteristic features of these streets.

  • Evening sunlight catching the Cornish flag at the stern of the St Mawes Ferry having crossed the Carric Roads in windy wet weather, forming a rainbow of the St Just in Roseland headland. A sailing yacht makes it's way out past Falmouth Docks into Falmouth Bay.

This is from a small number of images I shot over Christmas & Boxing Day whilst staying in Northwich with my brother. The relationship between nature and a huge chemical and rock salt industry created surreal landscapes, reminiscent of Tarkowsky films. Combined with the dreary weather and my own melancholy state of mind due to personal circumstances,  my resulting images are metaphorical - dark, sad, brooding, but with delicate sheets of light, glimmers of hope.

  • I found it fascinating that the sun rose over the sea and set over the land behind me, here on the East Coast of Britain. I am used to watching the sun set over the sea and rise over the mountains. Everything about this coast seemed foreign to me, out of sorts, uncomfortable, reversed.

  • A large sea with a long range swell slammed the seafront at Trearddur Bay at the end of November. Cars parked in the car park were literally covered in wave after huge wave - and pebbles! I shot from within the van for there was also torrential rain and swirling sea spray everywhere. These were some of the biggest wave crashes I'd personally witnessed here at Trearddur, though I'm sure there must be loads more occasions like this.

  • On the surface, a vast playtime beach, powerful surf, acres of space, stunning surrounding countryside and an area monitored by the Marine Conservation Society. Yet just around the coast to the left is the huge port of Milford Haven, oil tankers sit at anchor awaiting passage into the port. The beach is littered with oil, huge dollops of the treacle black mess at almost every 2-3 ft of the beach. Two gannets maybe 100 yards apart lie dead amongst oily pebbles. The MCS poster advises not to be concerned about individual dead sea-birds, and only to report large numbers if found, but there was something unsettling about finding two dead gannets so close to each other on this stunningly beautiful yet oil spattered shoreline. Was I just unlucky that day ?

Even in the height of the summer, the weather and light in Cornwall can be dramatic and changeable. Huge seas battered the coast and pounded over the small quay wall at Sennen Cove. In some ways understandably, another visitor cheesed off with the lack of summer weather decided to enjoy the bracing Cornish waters anyway, much to the amusement if slight disbelief of the crowds of onlookers :-)

  • If I knew I was dying, this would be an ideal place to go. On a grassy terrace high above the beach, looking South West over the Irish Sea, it brought back memories from so many places I’ve lived and visited, from Cornwall to the Azores, Scotland to the Canaries. The huge cliffs, steep drops and open expanse of the ocean would be a fitting place to finally close my eyes for the last time. I can only hope the poor sheep took similar uplifting thoughts with her!<br />
