I so often see images of lighthouses in pretty sunsets and surrounded by gentle sea, but of course the true purposes of these superb, engineered structures is to provide navigational aid and to help prevent nautical disasters in poor visibility. So, on this particular evening, the stormy weather and waves crashing over the nearby rocks, almost obscuring Puffin Island, really helped to convey the true purpose of this Trinity light. These are the conditions when many mariners will be truly grateful that they can see the light and position themselves accordingly.
The present Penmon lighthouse at 29m tall was erected between 1835 and 1838. It was converted to solar power in 1996 and it's 15,000 candela light can be seen 12 nautical miles away. It also has a fog bell which sounds every thirty seconds.
