The Western flanks of Eryri (Snowdonia) with the huge mass of Foel Goch and Y Garn beyond, taken in late afternoon light on a freezing cold winter's afternoon on Elidir Fach.
"I trudged higher up the hill; no rush, just savouring the sounds and textures, fascinated by the remnants of old industrial machinery en route. It was lovely breaking that virgin snow with every footstep, for a short time at least feeling as if I were the only person ever to set foot there. I was eventually overlooking Llanberis and Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and I was impressed by the monochromatic textures of rock and snow, countered by the soft colourations of clouds and sky.
By 3.45pm I was still about 400ft from the summit and intense black clouds were now widespread over Anglesey. The sun was dropping behind the hills, rapidly darkening the environment and lowering the temperature, so - not having a head-torch with me - tempting though it was, I decided to get off the hill instead. The sky became warmer, pinker and more intense and the shadows became darker in the freezing air.
