  • A very wet walk on Anglesey's West Coast, so wet that for the first time ever I carried an umbrella with me to cover the camera. It was very useful without a doubt.   • Amongst old field patterns on these ancient Welsh hills of the Llyn Peninsula in North Wales, lie even older patterns, of hut circles not easily visible from ground level. This hill is Moel Pen Llechog but all the hills around here were heavily populated (comparatively) byt ancient tribes from Bronze Age to Iron Age and even medieval times.

  • We found ourselves driving up a volcanic hillside along a heavily rutted dirt track, unable to turn around or reverse back, when all of a sudden we topped the brow of the hill and discovered amazing views and a beautiful textural landscape, as if painted by Andrew Wyeth! Rich earth contrasted with drab greys and sharp grass, shrubs and rock somehow seemed soft when viewed overall.

  • With just an hour or so to spare after a dreary day on Anglesey, I headed for the coast just for the heck of it, one of my usual haunts simply because it's vast, open and easy escapism. Having enjoyed some contemplative observation in the gentle gloom, I became aware that the ambient light had increased.  When I turned around the dunes were on fire, a blazing torch of orange light was burning over the Irish Sea and the the sky was fluxing from blue to pink. The fresh salty air was now blowing in my face and I felt liberated and ecstatic, for I also knew this momentary pleasure would be over in a flash.

  • Loving Connections” Sennen Cove, Cornwall (Jan 2016) - Fantastic light and wide open spaces on this huge white sand beach in South West Cornwall. I loved the rivulets from the surroundings hills, tumbling across the beach towards the open sea. We have been blessed this trip, with gorgeous light, warm temperatures and super company.

  • Looking towards the Carneddau range of mountains (over 3000ft) in Snowdonia, Wales. There was a dramatic light from low afternoon winter sunlight illuminating the mountainsides under gentle clouds above. The steep cliffs drop down to the highly glaciated Nant Ffrancon pass below. The foreground mountain is Carnedd Dafydd and the more rounded peak behind is Carnedd Llewelyn.

  • I was actually really excited by the subtle delicacy of it all, really ethereal and slightly surreal. I therefore left this one in colour as the muted shifts of almost desaturated colours present an honesty about the transformation of everyday vistas through simple elemental conditions.

  • Shot whilst being filmed for a French TV channel. I took the crew to Newborough where we discussed my 'Wind Formed' series, looking at the shapes and patterns within the sand caused by effects of the wind. This series started in about 2006. It was almost impossible to create anything worthwhile when a crew requests where to stand and where to look and when to chat but I was happy enough with this grab shot for them to use it within the feature.

One stops on the left, the other starts further up to the right, it's like a massive error of judgement by the wall builders! Why :-)) Beautiful light for this bizarrely abstract landscape though.

In fact there was so much texture in front of me that it was hard to find the minimalist simplicity I've been drawn to recently. For maybe ten minutes the world turned pink, the hue washed over the sky and infused in the gentle waves, even the wet sand threw it back skyward. I stood in the sea, in my walking boots, wave after wave lapping at my shins but amazingly my feet stayed as warm as the sunset colours. I studied the waves smoothing and cleansing the beach before me, back to perfection.

  • We have been extremely lucky on Ynys Môn not to have suffered the catastrophic flooding of elsewhere in the UK, and indeed I've been captivated by the sheer beauty of partially drowned landscapes that are normally so dry. The low-level flooding transformed everyday nothingness into beautiful textured mirrors of late winter skies. As I studied the delicateness of these water-logged grasses, I heard the first skylark of the year, and with it my heart lifted and I was imbued with hope for the future.

  • Within the expanse of hot white sand which stretched for miles here on the Skeleton Coast, a wonderful bubbling of hard-rock granite baked in the midday sun. Small weakneses in the rock had become fissues, divinding the stone hillock into strange and beautiful sculpted landscape. <br />
<br />
I tried walking on the exposed surface barefoot, to experience the textures and shape but my feet melted! The cold Atlantic Ocean in the distance had no cooling effect on this parched earth

  • The rocks down on the quiet shoreline seemed dark from afar, am isolated hard reef doing it’s best to resist erosion against the Irish Sea. <br />
<br />
Down in amongst them though, they became rich in character and colour. Every peak an unique individual, with different faces and textures and shapes. As I nestled into them they become my security. Small waves would belie their gentle appearance and would suddenly burst over the lower stoney barriers. As the tide advanced each wave reached further and faster up my legs. <br />
<br />
I enjoyed the small acts being played out in different sectors of the image. Little cameos, small and larger characters, but together creating an amazing stage set.

  • Such a huge range of colours and textures within this mid-winter Welsh mountainscape. The light was fleeting on the summits as clouds scudded by in the bitter cold high winds. Strangely the lower slopes looked almost autumnal.<br />

I can never get out of my head, that the visual surface of the earth, is only skin deep geograhially, and that just a few feet beneath, it’s solid rock. Life does indeed cling to the most exposed and seeimgly inhospitable places, it is a minimal surface zone between rock and air (or water) - I think of it as the ‘life zone’.

  • It was still winter, the rock was icy cold and the bitter rough surface of the curved rock, normally a sun-bed in summer, was freezing her skin. Yet, in the windless air, those afternoon rays of sunshine gave her some relief. She relished the pleasure and the pain and stretched out abandoned to the sensations. Her skin was tight, but textured to touch, thousands of goosebumps working hard to keep her warm.<br />
<br />
I’d never seen anything so incredible, not just the amazing landscape but that it cradled such a gorgeous woman. I walked over to her, took hold of her hand and whispered, “You’re beautiful!" She turned towards me, smiled and we kissed, warmth burning between us in the rocky wilderness that we had found ourselves in.
    Heat On An Icy Rock
  • A hillside tree is sillouetted by dramatic sunlight reflecting off the vast bay of Traeth Coch, (Red Wharf Bay) which at low tide reveals a pattern of sand cusps in the wet sand which reflect the bright sunshine. Small figures at the water's edge on the shoreline show the scale of this beach. <br />
<br />
Following a specific location request from one of my customers, I found myself (almost) lost outside Llangoed on a warm late summer's afternoon. The sunshine back-lit the leaves of lush overgrown lanes as Cara Dillon sang to me in the front of the van. The hedgerows literally brushed past me as I ventured into narrower and narrower pathways, crows giving buzzards a temporary reprieve as they laughed at my black VW squeezing it's way out towards the bay.<br />
<br />
The shallow beach at extreme low tide creates huge cusps of sand and water, resembling textile designs from the 1960s! The vicious and burning intensity of the light on the retina was not from the sun itself but from it's reflection on the wet sand. Although I tried to compose using peripheral vision I still was left temporarily blinded after shooting some frames.<br />
<br />
Of course the contrast between the sunlit sand and the dry areas surrounding, meant the contrast was of the scale. To me, this was wonderful though, for just as looking towards the light blinded me, I found the fake shadows to be a beautiful and textural contrast, absolutely stunning.

  • I’ve always loved the sea from above, from planes for sure, but even from mountain tops. A constantly morphing sheet of textures and pattern, sometimes describing the weather and the clouds above, but sometimes the currents below. Here on the approach to the Conwy Estuary the channels are winding and shallow and accurate navigation is critical. As the last of the sun went behind a huge cloud bank on the horizon, and the world went dark, only a gently illuminated shimmering sea remained clear.

  • The thick fog not only enveloped the beautiful Menai Strait, it also flowed deep into the woodland, separating trees and copses into delicate tonal patterns and textures, creating an almost rain-forest like appearance. <br />
<br />
On the way to work that Friday, I couldn't even see the end of our road for thick fog! As I had all my kit with me for a day's studio shooting, I drove via the bridges to see what atmospheric effects might be occurring. Whilst approaching the first lay-by, I saw a beautiful recessional tonal layering of tall trees disappearing into thick fog, almost top-lit by the weak early morning sun. However by the time I'd parked the van the fog has shifted and the recessional effect had reduced, so I walked right down to the edge of the Menai Strait to see whether either of the bridges would show through. This time I had the opposite problem where the fog was so thick I couldn't even see the field alongside me or more than 30 ft out onto the silent Strait. I trudged along a damp, muddy and waterlogged foreshore eventually meandering back up the misty fields to the road. Ironically, from this elevation, higher above the Strait, and with the sun starting to back-light the fog, I enjoyed several stunning variations of view from just a 200 yd stretch of road. The light, sunshine and fog were all dancing across the fast water when regrettably, I had to leave to open the gallery at 10.00 :-(

  • Another momentary wonder of light and land, as Carnedd Dafydd captures a rare sunbeam during a dreary, damp evening. Standing on the bank of the Afon Menai was beautiful for it’s sounds, tiny waves slapping pebbles on the shoreline; two Oystercatchers pile-driving the shell-strewn mudflats for rich food on the outgoing tide, and a Curlew calling as it skimmed the sea surface towards Y Felinheli but the light, was dull as dishwater. I was about o head back fro the van when a glimmer of light appeared over the Eryri hills, and within a few seconds a huge beam of sunlight scanned the peaks, illuminating the details and textures with such clarity. I shot just five frames before the sun disappeared completely and drops of rain touched my face.

  • One of my first images that I was truly proud of, was of intensely side-lit, cliff-top grasses blowing around granite boulders at Land's End at the most South Westerly tip of the British Isles. The light on the wind-blown sand dunes at Rhosneigr were such a vivid reminder of the light & textures I experienced nearly 40 years ago. I honestly felt as if I was there on the Cornish clifftop and I didn't want to leave the place.

  • In the early evening haze, the gentle sunlight picked out details and textures on the soft rolling hillsides west of Llithfaen and high above Y Nant. I loved all the wall and field patterns, backed by a series of small rounded hilltops. It was a very romantic rural scene, made all the more important because it really exists!

  • At high tide this is a vast stretch of wind-chopped sea. Small flocks of oystercatchers and turnstones skim across its surface as they wait for the spoils of low water and terns screech in the open sky before plunging into schools of small fish.<br />
<br />
But now the estuary is empty, just acres of wet sand and silt remain. In the middle of this huge open space a woman lies recumbent in the afternoon sunshine. The last rivulets of brine silently flow past her beautiful wet body, every inch of her skin delicately textured with raised goosebumps. The sunlight and gentle breeze warmed her flesh and her salty skin became smooth.<br />
<br />
That evening on my return journey, the tide was high once again. A lonely curlew gave its distinctive call as it flew inland to nest, and in the darkening gloom of dusk I saw movement out on the water. I focussed hard on the smooth curves amongst the small waves, and I saw a dark tail appear above the surface before the shape disappeared altogether. I can only assume it was a seal.
