• One of 3 winning entries in the 29th SUN (Shot up North) Awards for full time professional photographers
A colony of Goose Barnacles has grown attached to a disconnected buoy, now washed up on Llanddwyn Beach, West Anglesey.

 • A Christmas morning swim in the Menai Strait under dramatic but wonderful skies, pierced by sunlight and doused by rain in equal measure. As I watched cars sweep by on the road behind me, off to see relatives for Christmas lunch, I swam totally alone in the winter water, and it was utterly, truly fabulous and one of my most memorable starts to a Christmas Day ever.

I didn't even feel the cold, either in the air or in the water and I swam even further than of late, out to the far buoy. I smiled and then laughed out loud calling "Now THIS is Christmas" to the passing flocks of Oystercatcher and Cormorants.

 • A beautifully uplifting wade into the channel at Red Wharf Bay, where I was excited by the sculptural port & starboard buoys marking entry & exit to this shallow anchorage.

 • You have to visit St Ives just to witness the absolute clarity of the water beneath you. There are so many viewpoints where you can just stand and stare into the deep waters below and still make out the bottom. I've seen dolphins somersaulting just off the quay and seals regularly swim with the kids in the harbour, which from above looks just like an aquarium! I have always been fascinated by flotation and I love the way the boat on the surface aids our perception of the depth beneath.

 • A channel marker had pulled from it's sand bank in Caernarfon Bay and drifted on the tide to this point on the Llanddwyn / Malltraeth beach on Anglesey. It was successfully recovered and re-sited within 24 hours.

 • Early morning swim at Gallows Point before work, on a beautifully dreary Winter's day on Anglesey.

 • Drizzle was blown in with the warm winds off the Atlantic and the Spring beach was devoid of tourists. The gulls however seemed more than happy to have the beach to themselves.

 • Today was horrendous weather .. again!!! .. with gale force winds and sheets of torrential rain. This pre-work swim had to be close, so I went back to Beaumaris to the 'relative shelter' of Gallows Point, but by heck I could still really feel the gusts and the rain pounding all around me.
I swam towards the wind and chop, knowing that my return stretch would be with the wind and tide. I closed my eyes as I swam & just relished the brief bursts of sunshine on my spray-battered face. It was quite wonderful swimming with my eyes closed, it felt very dream like.

 • Early morning swim at Gallows Point near Beaumaris. In the summer I rarely swim here as it's a mecca for jet skis, powerboats and motor launches, but from Autum onwards, it gets safer and safer and more and more relaxing and wonderful.

 • I’ve always loved the sea from above, from planes for sure, but even from mountain tops. A constantly morphing sheet of textures and pattern, sometimes describing the weather and the clouds above, but sometimes the currents below. Here on the approach to the Conwy Estuary the channels are winding and shallow and accurate navigation is critical. As the last of the sun went behind a huge cloud bank on the horizon, and the world went dark, only a gently illuminated shimmering sea remained clear.

 • No matter when I go to St Ives, at some point the sun always seems to shine. An incredible, magical, history-rich town that for me at least is at it’s best outside of the holiday season

 • There are many days when we need saving, and I wish it was as easy as throwing a ring. Desperate for sunlight, desperate for escape, desperate to live life rather than just exist.

 • I was fascinated by the gentle, minimal arrangement of the buoys below Bangor Pier but the two gulls suddenly coming into view in the morning fog, completed a wonderful oval arrangement.

 • The most beautiful, serene sunset at Gallows Point near Beaumaris, with mirror glass sea and clear water below. The sunset is deceptive as it may look warm but the temperatures were bitterly cold.

 • A small flock of birds was the only noticeable movement in this whole scene, where the Cymyran Strait passes through the tiny village of Four Mile Bridge. I've literally never seen it this mirror-calm before, and I was SO awed by it that I screeched to a halt on the far side of the bridge and came back to photograph this amazing view. I got chatting to Janet, a retired surgical nurse who lives just a few hundred feet away from this, as she also stood mesmerised by the view. She said she'd been living there for many years and like me, had never seen it just SO perfectly calm, where usually the movement of the tide at least creates some currents and ripples.

 • An incredibly tranquil evening near Beaumaris, with winter sun forming a beautifully coloured backdrop over the far West of the Menai Strait. The colours were warm but the air, bitter cold.

 • The most beautiful, serene sunset at Gallows Point near Beaumaris, with mirror glass sea and clear water below. On the turn of the tide however, the strong currents can be seen stirring the calm Strait. The sunset is deceptive as it may look warm but the temperatures were bitterly cold.

 • Had a hard time getting this shot as the wind was gusting over 55mph and the tide was pushing me further offshore. In the lee of The Ark i was sheltered a little from the gale but the tide was still pulling me away. I was treading water madly to keep the camera above water, but I'm quite happy with this frame before I had to really battle back to shore.

 • Just the most incredibly tranquil scene where the Cymyran Strait passes through the tiny village of Four Mile Bridge.

The colourful handful of mooring buoys looked as if they were floating in the sky, to be navigated by aircraft.
