  • A brave Kestrel landed just 10 feet away from us, eye-balled us but didn't flinch. I took a few pictures of it before leaving him to it. Just seconds later he landed on the path just 6ft away from us before flitting down to the cliff top where I managed a couple of frames with the sea behind it.

  • If I knew I was dying, this would be an ideal place to go. On a grassy terrace high above the beach, looking South West over the Irish Sea, it brought back memories from so many places I’ve lived and visited, from Cornwall to the Azores, Scotland to the Canaries. The huge cliffs, steep drops and open expanse of the ocean would be a fitting place to finally close my eyes for the last time. I can only hope the poor sheep took similar uplifting thoughts with her!<br />

  • The views from Yr Eifl are spectacular at most times, but today was particularly dramatic and spacious. The huge fluffy clouds were racing up the coast over the tiny-looking villages of Trefor and Clynnog Fawr, and the morning sunshine cast distinct shadows down across a green-grey sea. They towered high above the land and dwarfed even the mountains. From my elevation, it gave an impression of flying, that ability to look down on the world below as if it were a map. When staying in Y Nant, surrounded on three sides by mountains, nestled amongst dark trees, the contrast between the escape of this nearby hilltop and the seclusion of the village was even more striking.

  • This was taken during a two hour outing to Anglesey's west coast one Sunday afternoon during serious gales & stormy weather. The seas were huge for Anglesey & were breaking over the cliffs, the strong winds sending plumes of spray into the air & dousing the land with salty foam. As the sun dropped in the sky, the light became more & more intense until it created a theatrical floodlight, backlighting the spray from the crashing waves. The wind was blowing so hard I had to almost sit on the tripod to keep it steady & the lens needed wiping down every few seconds. It was fantastic to be alone in these conditions on the cliff top because it generated an enormous sense of space & vulnerability whilst perched there. At this time of year, the light diminishes rapidly when the sun sets so I had to tread carefully over the wet cliff tops to get back to the van. It was an invigorating evening.

So tempting to think this shot is filtered but it's really not! The low winter sun exploded after a really stormy, wet day. My brother Simon and I were kitted out in full outdoor gear and we just lay on the grassy cliff top watching the skies change colour (well, he is an artist as well!). We were totally absorbed by the sheer variation in colours, and the speed at which the changes took place. It was so amazing that I also shot a series of sky images as well. It was nice to share this moment with my brother, as it recalled memories of our childhood in Cornwall, where we were both brought up and often did the same thing.

  • I love it when after leaving home which is covered by cold grey sky, I find myself half an hour later standing on a cliff top with sunshine warming my face. As the afternoon sunshine dropped lower in the sky, it broke below blankets of heavy cloud and blasted the sea and cliffs with intense light, illuminating rock pools and sharpening blades of rock. Getting to the sea has always meant escape to me, a chance of adventure and journey. Looking out towards a sunlit horizon means so much to me, especially hope.

  • On the other side of the hill the winter sunshine warmed the rock, not enough to fry an egg, but enough to allow you to sit down without your buttocks freezing to the stone! Out of the icy north-westerly winds, it was possible to just sit and enjoy the view down the Llyn to Nefyn, Porth Dinllaen and Tudweiliog. The clouds scurried past at speed, but no matter how many there seemed to be, this day remained sunny and bright most of the time and was an enriching experience.

  • I always enjoyed being on the hilltops when staying at Y Nant. There is liberation and escape on the open hillsides. The views are spectacular and wide and you can see for miles in most directions. As we are on a peninsula here, the sea and sky dominate everything, even more than the mountains running down its length. The snows gave the whole area an even greater freshness and brilliance of light. Just being there was invigorating and life-enhancing, the wind blowing deeply into your lungs and chilling your face.

  • On a glorious evening at the tip of North Wales the lo sunshine backlit clouds of spray from the long lines of surf rolling into the bay. Movement caught the corner of my eye and I watched three sheep scramble up to the top of. steep cliff - just a wonderful liitle moment.

  • Blown about on the cliff tops above a choppy sea, the sun burst through the clouds and the whole world brightened. The precarious, precipitous cliffs suddenly seemed welcoming and safe - it's amazing how uplifting a bright light can be.

  • Low cloud rolling in from the Irish Sea wraps around the summit of Mynydd Mawr and adjacent peaks of the Welsh mountains of Snowdonia at sunset. The top of a pine woodland can be seen on the hillside, separated from the background by  sheets of hill fog.

  • The huge brittle cliffs at Cape St Vincent at the most South Westerly point of Portiugal, jutting straight out into the Atlantic Ocean. If you look carefully you can see tiny figures of fishermen who actually fish from the top of the cliffs!

  • Echo Canyon is as it suggests, a natural amphitheatre. It consists of a huge concave hollow within colourful sandstone cliffs, carved by the action of water cascading over the top. This area represents the South Easternmost portion of the Colorado Plateau, a thick crustal block of the continent that has been lifted up forming a high desert environment with scattered forest below.

  • Remnants from a limestone quarring industry at this point at Rhoscolyn Head. This millstone is perched on the top of the huge white limestome sea arch of Bwa Gwyn.

  • Powerful waves slammed against the cliffs at Porth Chapel as set after set came rolling in. It’s hard to convey the size of these waves without human scale, but imagine 3 adults standing on top of each other on that wave smashed rock, and it gives you some idea!

  • This was one of those beautiful mornings with clear, low light and stunning saturation of colour. I had walked with my friend (and book producer), Jonathan, up to the top levels on the Trefor side of the valley to get a view back down at Y Nant. The sea appeared crystal clear and almost tropical in colour whilst the sunshine just ‘clipped’ over the steep quarried hillside to differentiate the levels. With the village nestling in centre frame, this image, along with its sister image, ‘A Different Level of Amazement’, used on Carl Clowes’ guide book cover, epitomises the full layout and topography of the place, showing it in all its glory – however, for most of my visits,the weather and atmosphere were altogether moodier, and in a way more dramatic and impressive. In this glorious weather it was easier to forget the mists of the past whilst revelling in the warmth and beauty of the present.

  • Though the sea never looked tumultuous and the swell height was rarely over two foot, the power of the explosion as the swell hit the rocks continued to surprise me. The stored energy in the waves was suddenly released on obstructions, rather than dissipated across long shallow beaches. In this shot, I love the way the wave appears to blend with the cliff and rise up to the cliff top. I always enjoy being on the beach after being in the mountains. I need to see the movement of the waves and hear their crash on the shore. Landscape always seems so much more vibrant on the coast.

Caught in squally weather, bitterly cold, blown about like a leaf in the wind, at the mercy of the elements and the huge expanse of the open sea - no, not a lonely sailing boat but me, clinging to the cliffs to try and get a shot at that magical moment, when man made and ambient light balance, that perfect window of opportunity which lasts just minutes. I love the softness of colours and contrasts in the gale driven sky behind, and the hint of comfort from the haunted lighthouse. I thought this was a joke until tonight, when as I was taking my last frame something pushed past me, really squeezing past my thigh. I honestly thought it was a dog but there was nothing there. Quite spooked.<br />

The rapidly changing and convecting clouds were accompanied by the operatic melodies of a Gilbert & Sullivan Opera, Ruddigore, being rehearsed at the nearby cliff top open air theatre - quite surreal !"

  • Brilliant sunshine and gale force winds made for an incredible light over the cove of Porth Trecastell.<br />
<br />
As I stood on the cliff top and looked towards the horizon, I had the illusion of low flying over the long wind-blown Marram Grass and the sand of the cove beyond. <br />
<br />
I felt uplifted in so many ways. This was a place I’ve swam and surfed and taken the kids swimming. My life is racing on at such a pace, history left in my wake and yet, the place remains fundamentally unchanged, and will create many more memories for so many more people in the future after my own lights have dimmed. A very special place.

  • When I created this image I was acutely aware of the tantalising proximity of the sacred island, the final destination for so many thousands of pilgrims, yet separated by a notorious stretch of dangerous tidal currents. After journeying for months, this final hurdle must have seemed almost insurmountable for the travellers. Here on the cliff top a strong, lean, powerful female outstretches her arms like the redeemer. She lifts her heels off the ground and has complete faith that she will receive help. She will fly, be lifted and be carried across the water. She will be helped to realisation, helped to the knowledge she seeks. As the mists swirl over the island’s mountain summit and the tidal flow surges between the landmasses, this woman will find her way.  She will cross the divide either through divine intervention or sheer tenacity.

  • From a lofty hilltop two hundred or more feet above the sea at North Anglesey, we could smell the sea air. Wave crests were breaking into spindrift and salty spray was funnelled up gullies in the cliffs below to fill our lungs with ocean gale.<br />
<br />
The clouds were changing by the second as they raced overhead, casting wonderfully animated shadows of strange figures on the sea below. Apart from the solid headland of Holyhead Mountain in the distance, the only other constant was the brilliant intensity of spring sunshine, shimmering on the millions of waves fetching across the bay. This was real exposure to the elements and from this high up, standing right at the cliff edge, it felt as though we were flying, carried by thermals almost literally lifting us off our feet.<br />
<br />
On the horizon a ferry noses out of Holyhead Harbour, beginning its three hour voyage upon choppy open waters to Southern Ireland seventy three miles away. I'm with my brother who I haven't walked with for many years, but we used to climb together, sail together and drink together; near inseparable until our late twenties. As we continued our cliff-top ramble, both clutching our walking poles and grumbling about the state of our threadbare knee joints, I realised that the only thing as eternal as the movement of wind, waves and tide, was the love between us brothers, all of us brothers. Although our separate lives are racing by faster than we would like, and that we will become just someone else's memories, these beautiful, wild, universal elements will be there for an eternity, bringing similar humbling joy to others in the future.

  • This is one of my rare naughty nudes, because the woman was a boundary pusher. She had a wicked glint in her eyes and even though I had planned my own narrative for this image, she decided to adopt this pose. I love the way she took my idea and extended it with her own sexuality.<br />
<br />
This image is about the irony of her situation, coming to a halt at the top of a sheer cliff face, fearful and uncertain about how to proceed.  Immediately behind her is dark woodland, full of spirits and shadowy characters. Her pose, however, is brazen, exposed and even inviting danger from the darkness.

“Early morning light passes through choppy Atlantic waves wrapping around me on this steeply shelving beach in South West Cornwall. It gives the impression of being underwater whilst the waves crash above the surface”<br />

I’ve been back to this beach many times and haven’t been able to shoot anything like it again. I was completely alone on the beach and the sea was choppy and the waves powerful. This is the most amazing naturist beach I’ve ever been to in the world, so as is only right and correct, I was in my birthday suit as I took this!<br />

I was using a heavy Canon 1DsMk3 and 100-400 mm lens to get this shot, nearly £7K of gear in the Atlantic ocean! What would have looked really crazy from the cliff-top was a little naked Jack-in-the-Box crouching down at the lowest point of a sand-cusp to shoot through huge waves as they rose in front of him, and then him standing up rapidly to keep the camera clear of the back-wash which went ribs-high trying to pull him back out to sea! This was one of my craziest shoots ever, but I am delighted with the result and yes this IS my all time favourite and I have No.1 of 10 hanging in my home.

  • One of my first images that I was truly proud of, was of intensely side-lit, cliff-top grasses blowing around granite boulders at Land's End at the most South Westerly tip of the British Isles. The light on the wind-blown sand dunes at Rhosneigr were such a vivid reminder of the light & textures I experienced nearly 40 years ago. I honestly felt as if I was there on the Cornish clifftop and I didn't want to leave the place.

  • On the eve of another severe lockdown, with my head closing in and the first irregular heartbeats in many months beating in my chest, I raced out to the coast for last minute medication. Since I heard about this mis-targeted lockdown, I’ve been telling myself “it’s just two weeks, it’s just two weeks, you can do it” but I’ve been in panic mode all day. Almost without fail after work, for years, I’ve always had a deep need to escape to the hills or the coast, it’s almost like an addiction because it makes me feel so good, so alive, that there’s a reason I’m on this earth.<br />

I think about the little city-men in suits, who seem oblivious to the mental health benefits of people being allowed to continue to get into nature, but who instead blanket legislate without thought about the unnecessary damage they are creating to well-being. Walking on a lonely beach or cliff-top harms no-one. Even at its busiest, Llanddwyn is massive with so much space to avoid others. Instead we are forced to walk the town paths like hamsters on a wheel with 20,000 other trapped souls. Why are they hitting everyone with such severe restrictions, instead of targeting those people & activities that really spread the killer disease?<br />

I’m still telling myself that it’s just two weeks and my lovely ITU lady who see the disease at its worst, also tries to calm me down about lockdowns! What an amazing angel, dealing with physically ill patients and a mentally wobbly partner !

  • On a baking hot day we drove into the sunset across the rugged high cliff tops of West Portugal. Jani sat in the van to call her Mam whilst I wandered down to the rocky cove. As I walked out to the low tide mark, i realised the beach was absolutely massive, miles long to the North and pure sea washed sand. The cliffs looked even higher when looking back at them. The day as usual had been clear blue cloudless sky, so it was an extra bonus to see delicate clouds gently sliding Southwards across the horizon. I had the whole beach to myself and was in seventh Heaven. <br />
<br />
However, when i turned to walk back to the car I noticed a young man curled up against the cliffs, clutching a beer bottle and looking most melancholy. I know that when I go into my dark patches, the beach becomes my salvation, my escape and my remedy - I empathised with this guy who had come miles to see the sunset on this spectacular and deserted coast.

  • She had travelled oceans and her body had ploughed through waves. She had baked in tropical sunshine and been whipped by Arctic winds. Enough was enough. She needed earth beneath her feet and the firmness of land for security. Under the cover of dusk she silently slipped from those she protected and headed for the cliff tops.  <br />
<br />
As they headed to sea on the morning tide, she could hear the calls of an unnerved crew hoisting sails. She felt guilty but her new journey was enchanting and she smiled secretly as the grasses blew around her ankles.
    The Missing
  • A wind-blown walk across the cliff tops towards Land’s End. 42mph gusts from the East tried to force us over the cliff edge but wonderfully, as we descended the cliff tops a little, the wind was hardly noticeable and we sat there soaking up the warmth and watched the Choughs soar and dive beyond us into the void. <br />

Here the distinctive shape of the Irish Lady stack was beautifully silhouetted along with the cliffs of Land’s End in the background.

  • The most incredible aerial erosion of granite over eons, forming huge molars of hard rock on the cliff & hill tops of Cornwall. They look so man made, gigantic Hepworth or Moore sculptures, but are completely naturally formed. the granite tors were 'bubbles' of lava that popped up through weaknesses in the earth's crust, and form many of the Cornish hilltops.

  • On a strangely wishy washy Corfu day, we had meandered around this ancient Greek castle, fascinated by the series of human shaped graves carved into the limestone. As we left the castle and drove up the hill opposite, typically the sun burst out from under the clouds and splashed light all over the cliffs and hill tops. It was very quiet there, save for the sound of the Cicadas in undergrowth. I couldn't believe we'd found this solitude on Corfu!
