  • Honourable Mention in the 13th Black & White Spider Awards 2018<br />
<br />
This is a deserted mining town in Western Namibia. In 1909 diamonds were found here and an industrial hamlet developed. Since then however diamonds are mostly found elsewhere and so this place went into decline. The small industrial complex is forever fighting to remain above the gale-blown desert sands but it’s still an incredible place to visit, as so little has changed at all since the early twentieth century. It’s quite eerie standing inside the large derelict buildings, the wind literally howling through the broken windows and doors, sand-dunes visibly creating within the broken interiors as you watch

  • What would have been rather gloomy interiors of this old diamond mining town, the most beautiful shards of light from broken rooftops pierced the darkness and patterned the coloured walls. Wind howled at the windows and doors but there was relative calm within the sand-filled dilapidated rooms. It was slightly freaky imagining the conditions for the native workers at the height of the diamond boom there.

  • I had been to photograph the ancient Roman settlement of Din Lligwy in the rain, but this derelict old chapel moved me most. At one time this building would have been part of the fabric and centre of local community but in an age where materialism and self preservation have become the game it was quite disheartening even as an agnostic that so much of our spiritual being has crumbled with the stone, the trees bearing witness to once was.

  • The huge open desert becomes a blank canvas for Daliesque surrealism when incongrous objects suddenly appear out of nowhere. There was noyhing behind me and nothing beyond except for distant hills. <br />
<br />
To come across this derelict house, alongside a railway that stretches as far as the eye can see and on which we never saw a train, really did make us question ‘why’ and ‘who would have lived there’. Genuinely surreal and a taste of things to come in the deserted mining town miles ahead.

  • Old Polpeor Lifeboat Station, Britain’s most Southerly point<br />

I’ve visited this desolate (and derelict looking) place since I was a kid. My parents loved the Lizard peninsula and we would often go there at weekends. This is the Polpeor lifeboat station, built in 1914 and finally closed in 1961 so I’ve never been fortunate enough to have witnessed it being used to house an actual lifeboat.<br />
<br />
What I have witnessed over the last 4 decades is it’s use by local fishermen to house their kit but I noticed this last visit a few weeks ago that the ramp has now completely broken up and it’s really only the shed itself that remains standing.<br />
<br />
The curved boat ramp in the foreground is still used regularly by small local fishing boats as it keeps them free of the worst of the heavy seas and weather.<br />
<br />
Nevertheless you can’t visit this place without becoming vividly aware of it’s important maritime history and the treacherous coastline in which it nestles. Even on the bleakest days I am drawn to this location and it transfers me instantly back to my Cornish childhood.

  • Having come down an incredible winding dirt track through the Kammanassie Nature Reserve from the mountain plateau above, we arrived at the most curious little cafe in the middle of nowhere. We drank tea and ate buttermilk cakes under the welcome shade of a huge tree. A silent, derelict looking barn drew my attention whilst we enjoyed refreshments in this paradise watering hole.

This is the deserted mining town of Kolmonskop in Western Namibia. In 1909 diamonds were found here and this industrial hamlet developed. The nearby harbour town of Lüderitz nearby also gained rapid prosperity.<br />
<br />
Since then however diamonds are mostly found elsewhere and so these towns went into decline. This small industrial complex is forever fighting to remain above the gale-blown desert sands but this and Lüderitz are still incredible places to visit as so little has changed at all since the early twentieth century.<br />
<br />
It’s quite eerie standing inside the large derelict buildings, the winds literally howling through the broken windows and doors and dunes almost visibly being created in front of your eyes.

When so much of Anglesey has been bought up by the super rich, it is unusual to see any buildings in an historical relatively untouched state. This cottage in a rural backwater, literally! on an untarred country lane, offers a gentle reminder of things that were.

  • Red shutters and sunlight on deserted house alongside a volcanic lake near Furness on Sao Miguel, Azores. Carol and I discovered this tiny but gorgeous cottage up in the trees above a stunning volcanic lake, bathed in sunshine.

  • Ruins of tin mine workings in the Godolphin area of South West Cornwall. Mine shafts sink 1000ft into the depths of the earth just next to here. Looking at the beauty of nature quietly reclaiming this once massively busy mining locality it's hard to imagine just how different the place would have seemed back then, noise, commotion, danger, dusty, dirty landscapes and the increasing destruction of natural landscape in our quest for ore & minerals. I've always been fascinated by the forgotten world of dark shafts & tunnels lying beneath our feet in regions like this.

  • The early morning sunshine cast an almost perfect shadow of one of the huge cog-wheels onto the nearby wall. It was fun to line up all three elements, linking shadows to reality. The visible shadow is a metaphor for so much of what one ‘feels’ at Y Nant; there is nothing ‘actually there’ but nevertheless we sense things and can sometimes even believe we are seeing things. The history, the topography, the remnants of what was, and the present landscape all blend together at Nant, and this blend for me at least is its ‘spirit’.

  • Iwas just fascinated by the hard, angular patterns of wall and shadow in this old industrial construction, and the softness of the scoop of cloud overhead. On such a warm day it made me smile.

  • Just above the village, which contained its own bakery, shop, school and chapel, there were also farms and, of course, industry. It is quite fantastic that so much of what was needed to sustain life was found within the immediate area.

  • From above, and in the natural serenity of recent snow, Tŷ Uchaf farmhouse looks beautiful, normal and inhabited, no longer the empty shell for sheep droppings, birds of prey and an occasional dead lamb. At one point in time I can imagine this farm could have been a very striking place to live and work, with stunning views, but the isolation, loneliness and hardship of tending livestock in this difficult valley, and getting them to market, could also have been just seriously hard work!

  • Alongside the wood, a small river flows down to the sea from the cascading waterfall of Y Graig Ddu. Through the often stunted and twisted trees at its edge, the old farm of Tŷ Uchaf can be seen, no longer inhabited, but still worked by a local farmer. The sudden downpour of light on the fields created a vivid separation between the open higher ground and the cold,dark,tight-packed mass of trees behind me.Ty Uchaf was like a Wuthering Heights to me, dark windows looking out over the valley and a sense of harshness and foreboding about running a farm in this remote isolated valley.

Stunning rainbows formed behind me as late evening sunset burned through sheets of rain moving across the mountains. It was so tempting to concentrate on the back-lit rain in front of me, but when this was going on behind my back I couldn’t resist a snap :-)

  • Small patches of nature even in a busy urban environment. My favourite bird, the Blackbird, was rustling around in the dry leaves inthe dark shadows, forraging for food. Warm morning sunshine heated the roof tiles and was a welcome relief to the chilly Northerly breeze.  Iwonder how long it would take for a city to look quite overgrown should people disappear and peace returns to the earth?

  • ".............we located the footpath and headed for the crag and a hut circle. Sadly, neither the intense evening sunlight nor the hut circle made an appearance, but just the walk up through thick heather to the fantastic shaped rocks made the jaunt worthwhile anyway. On the far side of the crag the land plummets steeply down a soft grass and heather covered hillside to the rocks below........." An old barn remains 'just' standing, patched and re-patched over the years. The signs of modern man, the telegraph poles and the wire fencing remind us that the past and present are always linked and often integral.

  • On the top of a high headland, in an apparently deserted village on the mountainous West Coast of Corfu, a cat silently and purposefully walks down a mosaic lane, it glanced at us in acknowledgement, but we didn't speak Greek so it moved into the shadows.

  • I love the way the sharp, lichen-covered triangle of the old barn, pierced the gorgeous rounded curves of the green hillside beyond. Colour, light, geometry, history, a wonderful mix.

  • I am always fascinated when nature reclaims areas and structures created by man, and this was no exception. A small tree is now growing out of the concrete floor, and grasses are forming a carpet. The rather pretty-looking wooden roof is still half-intact, and forms the roosting place for local choughs. I entered this building for the first time one dusk and disturbed two of these rare birds. They let out raucous squawks and shot out over my head. I’m not sure quite who was the most alarmed, but thereafter I always looked up first to avoid more surprises!

  • Like a creased piece of paper, this huge concrete retaining wall has folded outwards, and is now leaning precariously over the gravel slope. I was impressed that once a crack appears in such man-made solidity it soon spreads and weakens the whole structure.

  • The remains of St. Helen's Oratory, which date back as far as Roman times according to one observer, is a tiny early Christian chapel located in a field at Cape Cornwall.

  • I found the huge sweep of the bay, the plunging cliffs and the vast expanse of sky an awesome vista to behold. The knowledge that workers had carried on a very dangerous occupation in such a precipitous environment, often in awful weather conditions, was daunting to even consider. At the same time, perhaps, like the shepherds who walk stormy mountains or fishermen in rough seas, they also found something very elemental and humbling to be gained from working in these environments, something which goes beyond simple romance.

  • Opened 16 September 1912 the ‘Lime Street Picture House’ was a very upmarket city centre cinema, with a Georgian styled facade & a French Renaissance interior. The grand entrance foyer had a black & white square tiled floor and the walls were of Sicilian marble. It housed a luxurious cafe on the 1st floor and the auditorium was designed to have the effect of a live theatre with an abundance of architectural features, embellished by plaster mouldings. It provided seating for 1029 patrons. The cinema also boasted a full orchestra to accompany the silent films.<br />
<br />
On 14 August 1916, it was renamed  ‘City Picture House’ due to another cinema opening in Clayton Square called ‘Liverpool Picture House’. In October 1920 a new company was formed ‘Futurist (Liverpool) LTD’ to purchase the cinema and the two shops for £167,000.<br />
<br />
The era of silent films ended in 1929 at the Futurist and new ‘Western Electric Talking Equipment’ was installed. By the 1930s cinemas were popping up everywhere which affected The Futurist’s business and resulted in the cinema showing second runs of leading films.

  • A row of terraced houses in Duke Street has formed the backdrop to a unique piece of public art reflecting an important part of the city’s history.<br />
Giant photographs which tell the story of Chinese sailors and their families have been installed on the houses which are next door to the Wah Sing Chinese School.<br />
The buildings, next to Iliad’s development East Village at the top of Duke Street have been derelict for many years but the properties have now been given a new lease of life.<br />
The artwork “ Opera for Chinatown” – has been created as part of a year-long project to create a digital archive of oral histories and family photographs of the Chinese community by artists and oral historians John Campbell and Moira Kenny also known as The Sound Agents.

  • In an abandoned quarry village, high up in the windswept mountains of Wales, sits a derelict old chapel with it's roof timbers now collapsing inwards but still pointing skywards. It is only the spirit of the workmen in this busy slate quarry that remains, the valley is silent and desolate.<br />

  • From my series of images documenting the changing character of the vast derelict slate quarries near Llanberis & Dinorwic as nature & modern life reclaim this huge industrially scarred mountain-scape. The quarries closed in 1969 but the sheer scale of the industry is still apparent, and without doubt there are visual & spiritual echoes of the workmen who risked life & limb working there.<br />

  • It was a surreal surprise to find a ram’s skull staring at us from the apex of a derelict tin mining power house. This area is littered with the remains of an historical tin mining industry; exploration shafts now just lush grass-covered conical depressions in the wet moorland. Once a noisy hive of activity and ore crushing, but now just the sounds of the wind through gaps in the walls. Likewise the bleating of sheep still echo across the open landscape, but this poor soul has long past, the bone bleached and dripping with hill fog. It’s strange but there is such peace now on the moors and even the saturating low cloud creates a sense of calm not panic, silence not noise. I felt a deep connection with history and the spirit of the place. Dartmoor is minimal and mesmerising.

  • An early start today to photograph Eryri under cool morning sunshine. The forecast was warm & sunny, but when you factored in the biting Easterly gale, I was so grateful that I'd thrown in an extra jacket before leaving home. <br />
<br />
I arrived at an empty car park and enjoyed the whole mountain to myself, until my return journey. I was getting so buffeted by the gusts of wind that even my tripod wasn't helping much. I sheltered behind a derelict building at one point to try and increase my chances of sharp images! <br />
<br />
Initially I was disappointed by the haze, but actually, backlit by the morning sun, I began to love the softness that the haze created. In this image, you see Yr Wyddfa (or Snowdon if you really must, but never 'Mount' Snowdon!) with it's foothills of Foel Gron, Foel Goch & Moel Cynghorion, beautifully tonally layered in the fore & mid ground. The mist has helped to visually separate the lower peaks.

It seems only right that these incredible, surreal and industrially transformed landscapes have now been given UNESCO World Heritage status.

  • We stumbled across what we thought was a derelict cottage in the middle of woodland down a tiny track. <br />
<br />
Evening sunlight was pouring through a window beyond, and there was a reflection of the sky and trees in the front windows. I went up to the window &  was shocked to discover signs of habitation. There was even a calendar from 2015 on the wall, yet still I suspected that the place had just been deserted. I took this one image because of the beautiful light and sense of time passing, melancholy almost but imbued with such positive afternoon sunshine. <br />
<br />
It was only then that I heard a car pull up behind us. The very jovial driver was the landowner, and he told us that someone does indeed live there. The tenant is a 75 year old man who refuses to connect any power to the house, even though all the faciities are there. He only has a gas bottle to power his ancient stove. <br />
<br />
This old man has a tiny garden plot over a mile away on a steep cliff side, and he walks there regulalrly to tend his vegetagbles. He has an old car, but that is one of his only links wih modern’ish technology. <br />
<br />
The landowner is in no hurry to move the old gentleman on, and it seems he will see the end of his days in this ancient farmyard cottage, almost off the grid, and I hope deeply happy because of it. <br />
<br />
Next time I’m down, I’d love to photograph the old man himself, if he’d be happy for me to do so. What a character he must be.
