  • Shot on Llanddwyn beach as everyone else was leaving - well it was a bitter cold evening, no sunset, no 'obvious' excitement, but I was utterly connected that evening. In the darkness and solitude I became one with the peace, the dusk, the gentleset lapping sounds at the shore, the occassional oystercatcher calling as it skimmed the sea. I photographed gentle events.

  • No matter how difficult life seems to be, no matter how tenuous our grip on it, we have the potential to survive most things, to grow amongst darkness and to retain a beauty and importance no matter how delicate that may be. This tree is growing on exposed barren land, with nothing but sand and a thin layer of soil beneath, but it survives all nature throws at it.

  • One minute the summit of Elidir Fawr was bathed in early Spring sunshine and the next the sky had darkened and freezing vapour engulfed us. However the rapidly swirling clouds formed the most beautiful shapes and the semi obscured sun created a backlit stage of theatrical movement as we drank hot coffee to keep warm.

  • It was a surreal surprise to find a ram’s skull staring at us from the apex of a derelict tin mining power house. This area is littered with the remains of an historical tin mining industry; exploration shafts now just lush grass-covered conical depressions in the wet moorland. Once a noisy hive of activity and ore crushing, but now just the sounds of the wind through gaps in the walls. Likewise the bleating of sheep still echo across the open landscape, but this poor soul has long past, the bone bleached and dripping with hill fog. It’s strange but there is such peace now on the moors and even the saturating low cloud creates a sense of calm not panic, silence not noise. I felt a deep connection with history and the spirit of the place. Dartmoor is minimal and mesmerising.

  • The rain was relentless, coming down in sheets across the sombre Welsh hillsides, soaking the landscape and everything upon it. I’d just walked for hours on the deserted gale-blown mountaintops, alone but strangely happy in my solitude. The river in the valley was swollen, fed by the downpour but tumbled excitedly towards the sea beyond.<br />
<br />
The steadfast skeletal trees transfixed me. Their bare branches were almost still in the breeze and their water-drop laden twigs stretched out like a delta. These skeletal figures were in a sort of suspended animation, hidden life pulsing through the outstretched limbs but waiting to burst out in the spring, months from now.<br />
<br />
I didn’t really want to leave but my waterproofs were now beginning to fail after almost four hours of penetrating bad weather. I could hear the rain on my jacket hood and tiny beads of water now ran down my skin. It seemed that if I moved I’d ruin the silent connection between me and the trees, but I did, and it didn’t.

  • I have been captivated by this huge and isolated granite boulder at Land’s End since my early twenties, when I used to spend much time rock-climbing in the area. I’ve even photographed it a couple of times over the years, but today was the day when the boulder best depicted a large head and scowling face staring at the sky above. <br />
<br />
In the darkness of present times he’s saying “Oh my God, what have you let us become?”

<br />
This is from a small number of images I shot over Christmas & Boxing Day whilst staying in Northwich with my brother. The relationship between nature and a huge chemical and rock salt industry created surreal landscapes, reminiscent of Tarkowsky films. Combined with the dreary weather and my own melancholy state of mind due to personal circumstances,  my resulting images are metaphorical - dark, sad, brooding, but with delicate sheets of light, glimmers of hope.

"I was fascinated by the multitude of different colours in the rock and the natural uterus shape within it's folds. The veins of rock are feeding the womb and the fact that life itself was born out of molten rock, is still mind-blowingly incredible.<br />
<br />
There is a melancholy about the foetal position of this ageing man. He perhaps represents many for whom hope about the future, the sense that we have some important role on this planet, will maybe never be realised. We are still waiting to grow and be nurtured even in later life. <br />
<br />
As a species, we seem to have learned little about how to live at one with the planet, the planet that gave us life and without which we do not exist. Ultimately, perhaps all we ever have are wild dreams and a tenacious need to feel relevant during this blip on earth we call life"

    In the Beginning
  • Coastguard cottages in gentle morning sunlight passing through thick fog at Trwyn Du. These houses are so grand for such a remote and exposed spot. A blackbird hopping along the wall was the only movement in this gentle Spring stillness and it's song the only sound balancing the melancholy 'dong' of the lighthouse bell.

  • "The contrast between the sharpness of the huge rocky cliff and the delicate fragility of the female form in this image creates a tension - not just from the fear of cuts and slices from the knife-like edges, but also due to the apparent melancholy of the woman with such colourful sunlit surroundings. You'd think she was a modern day cavewoman but really, as Summer draws close she represents a wide held feeling or sadness about returning home after the universal joy of travel, sunshine and warmth, We all dream about our next naked adventure in the great outdoors before we have even finished the present"

  • Yet, despite all, there was a surreal if melancholy beauty to the place. This once tourism-fronted seaside town, this once also busy quarry town that has seen better days, is topped by ancient standing stones and open windswept moorlands. The often-quiet hilltops offer solitude and spectacular views, Eryri behind, Anglesey and the Irish Sea in front, a sea quilted with colours and shadows from the vast skies above. I’ve stood at the Druid’s Circle, high on the flat peak and I’ve spoken to the stones, literally, for they listen without judgement and they hear you. I see figures in their form, and in the low wet mists when no one else is around, they will move in the vapour. Up here, high above the shadow-nestled town, it is expansive and liberating, bright even in cloud and with wings you could swoop over the darkness of Pen to the sunlit sea beyond, perhaps in Summer actually catching some warm sun rays which catch the huge sandy beach skirting this shadowy habitation.

  • On a baking hot day we drove into the sunset across the rugged high cliff tops of West Portugal. Jani sat in the van to call her Mam whilst I wandered down to the rocky cove. As I walked out to the low tide mark, i realised the beach was absolutely massive, miles long to the North and pure sea washed sand. The cliffs looked even higher when looking back at them. The day as usual had been clear blue cloudless sky, so it was an extra bonus to see delicate clouds gently sliding Southwards across the horizon. I had the whole beach to myself and was in seventh Heaven. <br />
<br />
However, when i turned to walk back to the car I noticed a young man curled up against the cliffs, clutching a beer bottle and looking most melancholy. I know that when I go into my dark patches, the beach becomes my salvation, my escape and my remedy - I empathised with this guy who had come miles to see the sunset on this spectacular and deserted coast.

  • We stumbled across what we thought was a derelict cottage in the middle of woodland down a tiny track. <br />
<br />
Evening sunlight was pouring through a window beyond, and there was a reflection of the sky and trees in the front windows. I went up to the window &  was shocked to discover signs of habitation. There was even a calendar from 2015 on the wall, yet still I suspected that the place had just been deserted. I took this one image because of the beautiful light and sense of time passing, melancholy almost but imbued with such positive afternoon sunshine. <br />
<br />
It was only then that I heard a car pull up behind us. The very jovial driver was the landowner, and he told us that someone does indeed live there. The tenant is a 75 year old man who refuses to connect any power to the house, even though all the faciities are there. He only has a gas bottle to power his ancient stove. <br />
<br />
This old man has a tiny garden plot over a mile away on a steep cliff side, and he walks there regulalrly to tend his vegetagbles. He has an old car, but that is one of his only links wih modern’ish technology. <br />
<br />
The landowner is in no hurry to move the old gentleman on, and it seems he will see the end of his days in this ancient farmyard cottage, almost off the grid, and I hope deeply happy because of it. <br />
<br />
Next time I’m down, I’d love to photograph the old man himself, if he’d be happy for me to do so. What a character he must be.

  • We have sold 900 copies of this book, and the last 100 copies are being removed from sale until August 2024 to coincide with a major exhibition of my work at the Oriel Ynys Môn.<br />
<br />
This is my 4th & largest landscape book so far. Images are from my wanderings across the intriguingly beautiful regions of Anglesey, Snowdonia & the Llyn.<br />
<br />
This is not a book 'about' Wales, but instead a personal collection of atmospheric images stimulated by the light, weather & culturally influenced landscape of this spectacular area.<br />
<br />
You may recognise many of the places in this book, but when you study the body of work 'as a whole' you will hopefully notice something else, something unfamiliar - sometimes disturbing, sometimes melancholy, occasionally uplifting - something that has more to do with a spiritual connection to this ancient earth, infinite skies and that fragile thing called 'life'. Welsh Light is more than just an interpretation of a magical landscape; it's a momentary insight into my search for the 'bigger picture'.<br />
<br />
