"A young funny, dynamic 19 year old friend of ours has been missing since Christmas, and this river is his river, well in my mind it is, as it flows from his village to the sea. I was thinking about how lucky I am to simply be here, to breathe, to see, to live. The sunshine was sparkling on the water, the grass was lush and green, clouds scudded across a now clear sky and there was a cool crispness to the air, my fingers felt it, my face felt it, every bit of me was now awake and invigorated, but I wish I knew what had happened to the lad. We all think we know but nobody dares say anything, living in hope that our worst fears are proved wrong. It has been very hard for me to be near the sea since his disappearance. I have titled the image above in dedication to our young friend, and I cling to the hope that one day he will see it for himself."

  • The first monument before you reach Meini Hirion, (meaning long stones) which are known in English as Druid's Circle.<br />
<br />
This is a prehistoric monument on the hilltop above Penmaenmawr, North Wales. A 1958-9 excavation revealed two three sided cists, (stone slabs placed on end forming a cavity). Each contained a cremation burial, which in one case was sealed by a layer of quartz pebbles. Other finds within this “disturbed circle” were an oval hearth on which flat stones had been placed as if to extinguish the fire; a circular fire pit full of charcoal and a Graiglwyd stone axe. The site has been dated as being as being 1130-145 B.C.

Sneezing, coughing and nose blowing, I left the van and with eyes as blurred as looking through milk bottle bases I arrived at these ancient stepping stones. I had enough sense to plan for the tide this time as I wanted to see the stones surrounded by high water unlike my previous shot "Out of Sadness Came Forth Joy". A VERY different story today, and although I was feeling below par, the light was absolutely beautiful, sharp, crisp and intense. The skies were dramatic and the clouds voluptuous and swelling. I took great delight in jumping the stones across the deep blue water, just for the sheer hell of it. The surrounding water was incredibly calm and reflective with just the smallest signs that actually the tide was flooding

  • I sometimes find myself in dark places and it’s easy to close your eyes to shut it all out, but from out of nowhere I usually become aware of the gentlest glow of light. The delicate light is normally enough to see how to move forward. Once I’ve found the path everything seems brighter and the ominous clouds gradually move back to the horizon.<br />

It has also been used over generations to try & cure children of rickets, by passing them naked nine times through the hole in the stone. Locally however, Mên-an-Tol’s reputation for curing back problems earned it the name of “Crick Stone” Whatever rituals have gone before, my ritual is to pay this wonderfully surreal ancient site a visit, usually in moody weather.

  • In the early 19th Century, the capstone was rotated, and the uprights altered to support it. In the process the quoit was lowered considerably. It was said that originally a horse and rider could pass comfortably beneath it. It may originally have been as long as 60 feet in length and is estimated to have been erected in 2500 BC.  In the background stands the famous Ding Ding Mine, where Cornish miners toiled hard to extract tin for world export. It's ironic that whilst we were pulling out precious metals we were simultaneously sinking ancient monuments !

  • I have been captivated by this huge and isolated granite boulder at Land’s End since my early twenties, when I used to spend much time rock-climbing in the area. I’ve even photographed it a couple of times over the years, but today was the day when the boulder best depicted a large head and scowling face staring at the sky above. <br />

  • It was so strange, but in the whiteout the only structure that stood out on these open, snowy mountain-tops was this long dry stone wall with a stile. When you peaked over the top there was literally nothing else to see, just snow and no horizon, no view at all, unless white fog is a view anyway. I started smiling about its ambiguity in these surreal conditions.

A woman delicately ascends the slippery, lichen covered blocks, her soft skin vulnerable to the gritty surface, grazing her as she climbs. She stands on the summit, the highest point around, the wind whipping her hair across her face, and horizontal drizzle soaking her exposed body. She scans her surroundings looking for any signs of others, but there was no one. She was totally alone amongst the stones.

  • The superb rounded boulders created over thousands of years rolling around in this cove, were strangely and easily covered by shifting levels of grey sand. The gentle river tumbling down from the Cot Valley carved it's own niche, exposing once again the beautiful granite eggs.

  • I couldn't help but be impressed by the beautiful rounded shapes of these granite marbles, created by years of being rolled around in this organic looking chasm. This image was used as the main publicity image for the Celtic Connections touring exhibition which started in 2005 at Oriel Ynys Môn.

  • I could see this Tor from miles away, in every direction! It loomed, dark and strange, like a battleship on the horzon. As I got closer, it really was isolated from everything else. Only masses of wind blown grass, tangled brush wood, and hidden holes prevented access. It was a very spritual place for me, and finally climbing to it's dark, slightly green top, I felt privileged to be there, surveying the surrounding lands right down to the Atlantic.

  • August on Dartmoor. After months of earth-scorching summer the elements during our three day trip to this magical national park in the South West turned out to be mixed to say the least. Brooding clouds hovered over dark hillsides and the sun glowed rather than shone, through thin patches of grey blanket overhead. <br />
<br />
I was taken aback by how lush the valleys were, so much more tree cover than here in North Wales. The variation in the vegetation was also surprising, creating quite a tapestry of earthy greens and browns. Of course, the most exciting aspect of this landscape for me, is the granite beneath, sometimes punching upwards as huge sculptural tors, monuments amidst acres of silent grasses and foliage. I find Dartmoor uniquely spiritual, enchanting even and I can’g wait to return.

  • From above, and in the natural serenity of recent snow, Tŷ Uchaf farmhouse looks beautiful, normal and inhabited, no longer the empty shell for sheep droppings, birds of prey and an occasional dead lamb. At one point in time I can imagine this farm could have been a very striking place to live and work, with stunning views, but the isolation, loneliness and hardship of tending livestock in this difficult valley, and getting them to market, could also have been just seriously hard work!

  • Nothing is forever. The rock, millions of years old, is gradually being eroded away, battered and smoothed by repeated attrition from waves, pebbles and sand. There is beauty in it transformation, smooth forms now replace harsh jagged edges and identifiable shapes, faces and objects appear as joints are exploited and widened. <br />
<br />
A huge chair has appeared in a tiny cove, pale and curvaceous like the woman of the cove. At each low tide she can be seen sitting there on it’s rounded granite cushion, surveying her environment, enjoying the breeze in her hair and the warm sunshine on her naked skin. <br />
<br />
This chair has seen many angels, healers and mermaids and although this woman is the blink of an eye in geological terms, when she has returned to the sea another wonder will take her place. It’s always been the way at this magical cove.

  • After a bitterly cold but sunlit 8.5 mile landscape topography walk, during which we experienced sunburn and snow flurries at the same time, it was a welcome sight to see the gleaming white path leading from the ancient 300ft waterfall of Malham Cove, through the rolling green farmland back into Malham village, where we’d left the van.

  • Within 2 minutes I was in Llanfaelog and the most spectacular view presented itself, a full moon right behind an amazing flood-lit church of St Faelog. Even though I was in a blinding hurry, I decided to stop the van and shoot the scene anyway. Actually the moon and church weren't in the ideal alignment for the composition I wanted but by bracing my tripod over the steps of the church, I could just create a composition that worked. I shot about four exposures at varying shutter speeds to get the right cloud coverage of the moon (so much more interesting than the moon alone) and as I was making the last exposure, a huge silent white Barn Owl glid across the scene in front of me, straight out of a Tim Burton film :-) Of course with 20 second exposures there was no chance of me recording this beautiful creature, but it will always be there in memory and will always remain magical. There were other movements in the graveyard, rustles, snaps and slithers but I couldn't actually see anything. At one point I felt something brush against my trousers but still saw nothing.

  • The light dropped rapidly and here on the far side of the smoothed Atlantic pounded granite rock now looked dark and impassable. Deep rock pools contained small life forms darting from side to side waiting for the advancing high tide.

  • It’s tempting to believe that it’s easy to ascend above broken ground, as we clasp the rock and look to the light. Without diligence though and an acute awareness of our vulnerable position on our climb towards a purer level of existence, it only takes one wrongly placed foot and there’s a frightening slippery slope back to a dangerous reality.<br />

  • This is my Ladybird Book of the Countryside picture. It has all the romantic elements except the pheasant on the wall and ducks on the grass, but the buildings are just what I’d expect from the 1950s British countryside. Normally the yard looks rather quiet, but on this evening, a white horse was slowly walking about, very slowly. I just knew the moment had to be as the horse walked between the two foreground trees, catching the late evening sunlight as it did so. If it had been 2 meters further back it would have been in shadow (but at least social distancing!). So luck came out to play this evening.

  • A beautifully soft and rounded mountain landscape, grass covered and sensual. Amidst this gentlying blowing softness hard, prominent man made walls graphically divided the landscape. There was warmth today, not to the bare human skin but to the heart and soul.

  • Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) - 1,085 m (3,560 ft), the highest mountain in Wales, and the highest point in the British Isles outside Scotland. With a café at it's summit, it's also the highest café in the UK. A railway takes some visitors to the summit.

  • Most of my images have featured the individual in relation to their natural environment, but this most recent image contains three nude figures, creating a narrative (or narratives) which should be open to interpretation by different viewers. <br />
<br />
For me as the artist I was fascinated by these naturally occurring caves in huge sea cliffs, caves which really look as though they are dwellings not geological formations. In the early evening sunlight, naked, vulnerable human beings emerge from the caves and revel in the heat of the sunlight and the warmth of the rock of their environment. It was as if I were watching a wildlife programme whilst observing my naked volunteers in this imposing cliff landscape. I like that the rock separates each of the figures, so that they'd be almost unaware of each other, but in the lower caves a man and a woman make a loving connection albeit fragile, whilst in the higher cave a lone female looks towards the light and companionship.

  • Rock puzzles. The logical but nevertheless extraordinary juxtapositions of boulders and cliffs, pegs and holes. Here, a huge boulder almost five foot high appear to have rolled out of it's natural slot. How does anything this huge and this heavy get moved so easily other than by universal forces !

  • ".............we located the footpath and headed for the crag and a hut circle. Sadly, neither the intense evening sunlight nor the hut circle made an appearance, but just the walk up through thick heather to the fantastic shaped rocks made the jaunt worthwhile anyway. On the far side of the crag the land plummets steeply down a soft grass and heather covered hillside to the rocks below........." An old barn remains 'just' standing, patched and re-patched over the years. The signs of modern man, the telegraph poles and the wire fencing remind us that the past and present are always linked and often integral.

  • After the harshness of the crags and cliff sides, the angular edges of the quarried levels and the tidy angles of the village itself, these large and beautifully rounded boulders seemed almost organic, and the way they spaced themselves evenly across the fine pebbles of the beach gave them a lifelike character of their own. It was hard to resist simply running my hands over the beautiful smooth curves, much as you would with a Henry Moore sculpture.

  • Large, two foot wide, perfectly rounded and amazingly smooth, extremely heavyweight granite boulders in this faraway cove are gently and regularly caressed by the softest grasses growing from between the sensual curves. At the back of the beach the grasses almost completely envelop the boulders and the contrast between hard and soft, organic and inorganic, solid and delicate, static and moveable was richly obvious. I could have spent a whole day at this long boulder cove, immersed in the sensuality of such beautiful forms and contrasts..

  • "The contrast between the sharpness of the huge rocky cliff and the delicate fragility of the female form in this image creates a tension - not just from the fear of cuts and slices from the knife-like edges, but also due to the apparent melancholy of the woman with such colourful sunlit surroundings.
