  • After a bitterly cold but sunlit 8.5 mile landscape topography walk, during which we experienced sunburn and snow flurries at the same time, it was a welcome sight to see the gleaming white path leading from the ancient 300ft waterfall of Malham Cove, through the rolling green farmland back into Malham village, where we’d left the van.

  • Trees in wall circles, trees outside wall circles, a huge white lane and snowing in sunshine - this lane seemed to be a lane in waiting for something magical to occur.

  • Such beautiful sunlight but quite an unnerving position down there in the gully. The waves appeared regular but every now and then rigue waves appeared, crashing over the large boulders in front of me and blasting spray over me and the camera.<br />

I’ve visited this arch many times over the years but after hearing of the recent collapse of the Azure Window arch in Gozo, Malta, I felt the urge to revisit our own wonderful coastal feature here at Bwa Gwyn.

  • So much of the very famous limestone pavement above Malham Cove itself, are highly polished and eroded due to sheer footfall, but just walk an extra mile or so and there are far wilder and actually more exciting pavements to marvel at. In the dramatic dark weather, low afternoon sunshine blasted across the landscape and the white limestone really came into it’s own visually.

  • Dramatic evening sunlight catches the West facing cliffs of a limestone gorge above Malham Cove in the Yorkshire Dales. It looks warm and vibrant but the wind was arctic and sunlight was mixed with snow flurries

  • The wonderful sunlight of the morning was gradually disappearing - once scudding cloud shadows now dark sheets across the landscape - the cold winds now seemed bitter. As the weather front moved closer, last beams of direct sunlight illuminated isolated hills and peaks created a theatrically sculpted topography. Moel Cynghorion feels the last warmth as Tryfan stands imposing in the backgrpound shadows.

  • The early morning sunshine cast an almost perfect shadow of one of the huge cog-wheels onto the nearby wall. It was fun to line up all three elements, linking shadows to reality. The visible shadow is a metaphor for so much of what one ‘feels’ at Y Nant; there is nothing ‘actually there’ but nevertheless we sense things and can sometimes even believe we are seeing things. The history, the topography, the remnants of what was, and the present landscape all blend together at Nant, and this blend for me at least is its ‘spirit’.

  • This was one of those beautiful mornings with clear, low light and stunning saturation of colour. I had walked with my friend (and book producer), Jonathan, up to the top levels on the Trefor side of the valley to get a view back down at Y Nant. The sea appeared crystal clear and almost tropical in colour whilst the sunshine just ‘clipped’ over the steep quarried hillside to differentiate the levels. With the village nestling in centre frame, this image, along with its sister image, ‘A Different Level of Amazement’, used on Carl Clowes’ guide book cover, epitomises the full layout and topography of the place, showing it in all its glory – however, for most of my visits,the weather and atmosphere were altogether moodier, and in a way more dramatic and impressive. In this glorious weather it was easier to forget the mists of the past whilst revelling in the warmth and beauty of the present.
